Early on in my relationship with Pinterest, I spied a craft that I just knew I had to try.
Yes, I did refer to it as a relationship. Anything this passionate has to be a relationship.
(Otherwise I'm just a hussy.)
So as I was saying, there was this craft--tissue paper lanterns, seen here and here--and I just knew I had to make one. Lucky for me I already had a bunch of paper lanterns left over from my mother's wedding.
That would be the wedding I hosted here in my house.
Remember all those sitcoms in the seventies where someone would get engaged and the next week there would be a wedding in the main character's living room?
Well, just call me Maude. Or Alice. Or Rhoda.
(I shudder to think how many of you will not get those references.)
So as I was saying, I already had the lantern:
And old faithful (a.k.a. my trusty glue gun):
The one item lacking was a package of tissue paper circles. I found them on Amazon (I've attached a link under the "products" tab) but before I could order them something else caught my eye: fabric flower petals. They're really intended for flower girls but I immediately envisioned them attached to a lantern.
(There's also a link to these in "products.") |
So I got to work:
First I put a dollop of glue on the top of a petal.
Then I attached it to the top of the lantern. (You know it's the top because it has that little metal hook. If the metal part is flat, like in the image below, turn the lantern over.)
Then I continued the gluing petals...
...each one slightly overlapping the one before it.
I continued in that fashion...
...until eventually the lantern was covered.
(To borrow a quote from one of my favorite bloggers, it was easy-peasy!)
Mine now hangs from my daughter's ceiling right next to some store-bought tissue paper pom-poms.
(And I have a feeling more will be joining them ;)
Oh, I like that pink flower bud lamp.

ReplyDeleteMarie, you know you're responsible for taking my hot glue gun virginity. The first time I ever used one was when Gina and I embellished the munchkin hats in "Wizard of Oz"!
ReplyDeleteLove that idea!! Megan

This is such a cute idea! I love the petals instead of tissue circles - it looks more classy I think :) This would be amazing for a wedding! xx (Just found you through the link party by the way)
ReplyDeleteAnna (My Design Ethos)
Your idea to use bridal flower petals is quite clever and creative ... love it! I've been thinking about a similar project with crepe paper but was concerned about how cleanable it would be since my project is in the kitchen ... with silk petals I think I might be OK :) Thanks for sharing; I've also posted to "It's a Cinch".
ReplyDeleteYour recipes also look really good. I'm your newest follower now.

The perfect pretty light fixture for a girl's room :-) It looks great hanging with the tissue paper pompoms - a whole bunch of them together would look even more fab! Good thing they're easy-peasy to make, because I'm sure your daughter will be wanting more. And probably her friends too!
ReplyDeleteKelly
How awesome is this - my daughter would love some of these in her room, too!!
ReplyDeleteI think this is just perfect for a girls room. I actually like your light better than the purchased ones. Thanks so much for the morning laugh...and for linking up. :)
ReplyDeleteKarah
I tried to paint my paper lantern and then put paper flowers on it a la an idea from pinterest... it so didn't turn out the way I thought it would! Now to just get to IKEA to buy a new shade... ugh!

ReplyDeleteVery pretty and certainly does look "easy-peasy"~And love the references to the 70's sitcoms...those too young to relate missed out on some great vintage television...much better than today's fascination with reality TV!
ReplyDeleteso pretty!!! Love this!! How simple!
ReplyDeleteThese area adorable!! I'm loving that pink one, how cute for a girl's room or even a powder room... or even a sewing room, lol. Great tutorial, Elena!
ReplyDeleteIf you are going to cover the whole lantern why not start at the bottom and work your way up? How did you get the 1st row to not get glued down by next row? I can see if you are only doing a few rows but with whole lantern covered makes more sense to start down and work your way up.
ReplyDeleteHonestly Judi, it's been 2 1/2 years since I did this project so I don't remember why I did it the way I did. I think I just tucked them underneath the row above them. I remember it being quite simple to do but obviously your way would also be easy—perhaps even easier. :)
